Why Malawi

Job boards, Japanese car exporters and an Android audience

Ahrefs’ October 2026 ranking of sites in Malawi by estimated organic search traffic has three Malawian job boards in its top 100: CareersMW at 33rd, Job Search Malawi at 58th and Ntchito at 82nd. The only vehicle sites are the Japanese used-car exporters BE FORWARD (25th) and AutoCJ (77th); the only shops are Alibaba, Amazon and AliExpress, at 75th, 91st and 92nd.

StatCounter’s September 2026 figures for Malawi put 65.42% of page views on phones, 94.88% of mobile traffic on Android and 96.05% of searches on Google. Bing had 3.41% of searches overall but 0.61% on phones, and Opera was the second browser, with 5.79%. Rank checks on google.mw are set up as on the SERP proxy page.

Coverage

Lilongwe, Blantyre and Malawi’s three regions

The 2018 census counted 17,563,749 people. Only 16.1% lived in urban areas, and Lilongwe, Blantyre, Mzuzu and Zomba held 76.7% of them. Logins pick Malawi as a whole with -cc-mw; the dashboard generator shows any regions and cities on offer.

Population: NSO, 2018 census, report on spatial distribution and urbanisation; Kasungu, Dedza and Mzimba are counted as district bomas. Lookups print the regions as GeoNames does. Where available, exits also come from Limbe and Kanjedza in Blantyre and from Nkhata Bay. Databases can disagree on placement, so check an exit’s town in our IP checker.

Networks

Airtel and TNM, then a handful of small ISPs

APNIC Labs puts 82.07% of Malawian internet users on Airtel’s network and 37.17% on TNM’s; its estimates overlap, so together they pass 100%. Every other network in the table is below half a per cent, among them one run by ESCOM, the electricity company.

Users: APNIC Labs, 29 October 2026; the 21 Malawian rows add up to 123.69%. IPv6: APNIC, to 30 October 2026, when 1.08% of Malawian users were IPv6-capable. Left out: Starlink (2.12%), the education network MAREN (0.44%), Airtel Rwanda’s AS327708 (0.09%), government and revenue-authority networks, Cloudflare and Datacamp. Ecofin Agency reported 8.1 million subscribers for Airtel and about 5 million for TNM at the end of 2024. Network keys exist for US, UK and German logins only; afterwards, a Malawian exit’s ASN or host name tells you whether it is on Airtel or TNM.

Mobile

Mobile coverage and use in Malawi, 2025

GSMA Intelligence figures from a GSMA report posted on MACRA’s website in August 2026. Malawian mobile exits run on Airtel and TNM where the pool has them; see the order page.

3G population coverageshare of people within 3G coverage92%
4G population coverage100% in urban areas, 71% in rural ones87%
Unique mobile subscribers8.28 million people with at least one SIM37%
Smartphone usersshare of the population33%
Unique mobile internet users2.78 million; 80% of people live within coverage but do not use it12.5%

GSMA, Driving digital transformation of the economy in Malawi (2026), from GSMA Intelligence data for 2025. MACRA counted 14.9 million mobile cellular subscriptions (73.99% of the population) and 9.5 million mobile broadband subscriptions in December 2024; unique counts are lower because many people use more than one SIM.

For developers

A Southern Region exit, named by host name or ASN

Malawi, -cc-mw, and a one-hour session go into the login. Exits outside MW are thrown away, the first one in the region you name is kept, and its network is labelled from the host name for Airtel (.r.airtel.mw) or from the ASN for the rest.

import requests, uuid
GATE = "gate.aeonproxy.com:7000"
# Country key only. Airtel Malawi host names end in ".r.airtel.mw"; a few of
# them geolocate to Johannesburg under Airtel Rwanda's AS327708.
NETWORK = {"AS37440": "Airtel", "AS37294": "TNM", "AS36913": "TNM",
           "AS37098": "Globe Internet", "AS37187": "Skyband", "AS328844": "Afrimax"}

def network_of(geo):
    if geo.get("hostname", "").endswith(".r.airtel.mw"):
        return "Airtel"
    return NETWORK.get(geo.get("org", "").split(" ")[0], geo.get("org"))

def malawian_exit(region=None, tries=8):
    for _ in range(tries):
        sid = uuid.uuid4().hex[:8]
        proxy = f"http://ap_a1b2c3-cc-mw-sid-{sid}-time-3600:PASS@{GATE}"
        try:
            geo = requests.get("https://ipinfo.io/json", proxies={"http": proxy, "https": proxy}, timeout=20).json()
        except requests.RequestException:
            continue # no reply: try another session
        if geo.get("country") != "MW":
            continue # an Airtel range placed in ZA ends up here
        if region is None or geo.get("region") == region:
            return proxy, geo, network_of(geo) # same exit for one hour
    return None, None, None

proxy, geo, net = malawian_exit("Southern Region") # Blantyre, Zomba, Mangochi
if proxy:
    print(geo["ip"], geo.get("city"), net)

Pass "Central Region" for Lilongwe or "Northern Region" for Mzuzu. Session length is set in seconds with -time-, from 60 up to 21600; drop -sid- and each request leaves from a new address. Carrier keys work only in the US, the UK and Germany.

A Malawian quirk

Data protection, computer misuse and encryption rules in Malawi

The Data Protection Act No. 3 of 2024 names MACRA, the communications regulator, as the Data Protection Authority (section 4). Processing needs a lawful basis, such as consent or a legitimate interest that the person’s rights do not override (section 8). A controller based or operating in Malawi that processes the data of more than 10,000 people resident there must register with MACRA as a data controller of significant importance (sections 2 and 41), and a compliance order can impose an administrative penalty of up to K20,000,000 (section 45). The contact names and numbers in job ads are personal data; a count of the ads is not.

Section 84 of the Electronic Transactions and Cyber Security Act No. 33 of 2016 makes intentional access to or interception of data without authority, or beyond the access granted, an offence carrying a K2,000,000 fine and five years in prison. The same Act requires anyone who provides cryptography services in Malawi to register with MACRA (section 52), and it states that any person may use an encryption product that came lawfully into their possession. We found no Malawian rule on proxy use as such.

Malawi proxy questions

A proxy that sends your requests out from an address on a Malawian network, nearly always Airtel or TNM, so websites answer as they would for someone in Malawi. You need one for CareersMW and Ntchito job ads, the prices BE FORWARD or Alibaba quote a Malawian buyer, google.mw rankings and checks of your own pages.

163K+ residential IPs in the pool, October 2026; homes and phones join and leave, so the number moves. Mobile IPs have no count of their own: mobile exits run on Airtel and TNM where the pool has them, with availability on the order page.

The login targets the country, -cc-mw, and the dashboard generator lists any regions and cities on offer, where available. For one part of the country, keep exits by the region field: Lilongwe sits in the Central Region, Blantyre and Zomba in the Southern Region. Town names vary from one database to another; our IP checker shows the one an exit reports.

From homes and phones on Airtel and TNM, the two networks APNIC estimates reach 82.07% and 37.17% of Malawian users, and on small ISPs such as Globe Internet, Skyband, Afrimax and Bengol.net. A Malawian login cannot ask for one of them (network keys are for the US, the UK and Germany), but the ASN or host name of the exit shows which network you got.

Some Airtel Malawi addresses, in 137.64.16.0/21, were announced in October 2026 by Airtel Rwanda’s AS327708 as well as by Airtel Malawi, and ipinfo.io placed the two we looked up from that block in Johannesburg. Their country field reads ZA, and the Python tab drops them.

Rarely, going by APNIC: 1.08% of Malawian users were IPv6-capable on 30 October 2026, against 4.87% across Eastern Africa, with Airtel at 0.04% and TNM at 0.12%. Build for IPv4.

Rotating residential exits are enough for job ads, car prices and search results. Mobile exits, $0.50 more per GB, fit app tests and phone layouts. Accounts you own and run within each platform’s rules belong on an ISP proxy, a static address for as long as you rent it; the order page lists Malawian stock.

No Malawian rule we read deals with proxy use itself. The Electronic Transactions and Cyber Security Act makes access to data without authority an offence (section 84) and requires providers of cryptography services in Malawi to register with MACRA, while allowing anyone to use encryption they obtained lawfully. Any personal data you gather is covered by the Data Protection Act, 2024. Not legal advice.

Free proxies are run by people you cannot identify, and they can log every request and password you send. In a lookup, a Malawian home or phone line shows AS37440 (Airtel), AS37294 (TNM) or a local ISP; if the field names a hosting company, the proxy sits in a data centre.

Fill in the HTTP proxy settings of your extension, app or library: gate.aeonproxy.com, port 7000, username ap_a1b2c3-cc-mw and your password. With -sid-llw01-time-900 on the end of the username, one exit stays for 15 minutes. SOCKS5 settings are in the docs, and the pricing page describes the free trial as it stands.
