Why Iceland

Home stores, tourism sites and two search engines

Retail

ELKO, third of all Icelandic sites

By estimated search traffic, Ahrefs puts elko.is 3rd in Iceland for October 2026 and first in shopping. BYKO is 11th, Bauhaus 13th and Húsasmiðjan 15th, all building and home stores. Prices are in krónur, with VAT at 24%, or 11% at the reduced rate.

Travel

Tourism pages in more than one currency

In the same list, guidetoiceland.is is 5th and first in travel, and icelandair.com is 14th. Guide to Iceland’s page data names ISK as its marketplace currency, yet its home page printed tours as “From 154 USD” when read from a server in France on 3 November 2026. Compare the same tour from an Icelandic IP before you store it.

Languages

Polish beside Icelandic and English

Polish citizens are the largest foreign group, 23,329 on 1 January 2026, and foreign citizens make up 17.89% of residents. Two Polish sites filed under news, interia.pl and wp.pl, are 75th and 77th on Ahrefs’ list for Iceland. bilasolur.is has a Polish version, and Fasteignir.is a Polish buying guide.

Search

Bing holds 13.93% on desktops

Google answered 84.24% of Icelandic searches in October 2026, Bing 8.76% and DuckDuckGo 4.46% (StatCounter). Desktops produced 63.13% of page views; on phones Bing has 0.61%. Rank checks belong on both engines, as SERP proxies explains.

Coverage

Icelandic residential proxies from Reykjavík to the Westfjords

Statistics Iceland counted 394,324 residents on 1 January 2026, and 63.88% of them live in the Capital Region. An Icelandic login sets the country alone, -cc-is; regions and towns on offer appear in the dashboard generator.

For developers

One check for every spelling of an Icelandic town

Each session runs 30 minutes on one Icelandic exit (-cc-is). The script reduces a town name to plain letters, so Hafnarfjörður, Hafnarfjordur and Hafnarfjordhur compare as equal, and it reads króna prices with dots as thousands.

import requests, uuid, unicodedata
GATE = "gate.aeonproxy.com:7000"
# Country key only. Lookups spell one town several ways (Hafnarfjörður, Hafnarfjordur,
# Hafnarfjordhur), so reduce a name to plain letters before comparing it.
NETWORK = {"AS6677": "Síminn (registered to Míla)", "AS12969": "Sýn (shown as Vodafone)",
           "AS44735": "Nova", "AS51896": "Hringdu"}

def plain(name):
    name = name.lower().replace("ð", "d").replace("þ", "th").replace("æ", "ae").replace("dh", "d")
    return "".join(c for c in unicodedata.normalize("NFD", name) if not unicodedata.combining(c))

def icelandic_exit(town=None, tries=12):
    for _ in range(tries):
        sid = uuid.uuid4().hex[:8]
        proxy = f"http://ap_a1b2c3-cc-is-sid-{sid}-time-1800:PASS@{GATE}"
        try:
            geo = requests.get("https://ipinfo.io/json", proxies={"http": proxy, "https": proxy}, timeout=15).json()
        except requests.RequestException:
            continue # no answer: open a new session
        if geo.get("country") != "IS":
            continue
        if town and plain(geo.get("city", "")) != plain(town):
            continue
        geo["network"] = NETWORK.get(geo.get("org", "").split(" ")[0], geo.get("org"))
        return proxy, geo # the same exit for 30 minutes
    return None, None

def krona(text):                                # "84.900.000 kr." gives 84900000
    return int(text.split(" ")[0].replace(".", ""))

proxy, geo = icelandic_exit()
if proxy:
    print(geo["ip"], geo.get("city"), geo.get("region"), geo["network"])

Call icelandic_exit("Akureyri") to wait for an exit placed there, where available. -time- takes 60 to 21600 seconds; drop -sid- and each request gets a new exit.

Data protection and unlawful access rules in Iceland

The GDPR reaches Iceland through the EEA Agreement and Act No 90/2018 on Data Protection and the Processing of Personal Data, in force since 15 July 2018. Persónuvernd, the Data Protection Authority, supervises it under Article 39, and Article 13 limits the use of the personal identification number, the kennitala. Collect prices and counts without seller names, phone numbers or entries from the Já.is directory.

Article 228 of the General Penal Code No 19/1940 punishes unlawfully obtaining access to other people’s data or programs stored in machine-readable form with a fine or up to one year in prison. Neither Act 90/2018 nor the Penal Code mentions proxies or VPNs. Article 183 penalises making a livelihood from gambling or betting, and gambling sites are not a supported use.

Not legal advice. Penal Code articles and penalties come from the Government’s English copy, consolidated to 1 September 2014. Scraping rulings from 2022 to 2026: our court-case guide.

Iceland proxy questions

An Iceland proxy routes your requests over an Icelandic home or phone connection, so sites answer as they would a visitor in Iceland. Use one to read ELKO and BYKO prices in krónur, follow google.is rankings or check your own Icelandic pages from inside the country.

4K+ residential IPs in the pool, October 2026. Home connections join and leave, so the number moves. Mobile IPs have no count of their own: mobile exits run on Síminn, Nova, Sýn and Hringdu where the pool has them, and the order page shows availability.

A login sets the country and nothing finer, with -cc-is. Regions and towns, where available, are listed in the dashboard generator. For a town, confirm it in our IP checker, since databases spell and place Icelandic towns differently.

Homes and phones on the networks Icelanders use: Síminn, Sýn, Nova and Hringdu, plus regional ISPs such as Hringiðan, Snerpa and Austurljós. Network keys are offered for the US, the UK and Germany only; the ASN in a lookup tells you which network an exit is on.

Síminn’s customers sit on AS6677, registered to Míla hf, a wholesale network company; one block is labelled “Siminn hf. End-user assignments”. AS12969 appears as Vodafone Iceland in ipinfo and as Ljosleidarinn ehf in RIPE, and vodafone.is redirects to syn.is. Match on the ASN.

Residential and mobile are the options for Iceland today; the order page lists the countries with static IPs. Rotating residential exits cover shop prices, ads and search results. Mobile exits cost $0.50 more per GB and suit app checks; iOS ran 62.78% of Icelandic mobile traffic in October 2026.

Residential traffic costs $3.49 per GB on small orders and $1.69 at the largest volume; mobile runs from $3.99 to $2.19, and traffic does not expire. ISP ($4.00) and datacenter ($2.00) IPs, per IP per month, are sold in the countries the order page lists. The pricing page has every tier.

The two Icelandic texts we read, Act 90/2018 and the General Penal Code, do not mention proxies or VPNs; the Electronic Communications Act was not among them. Their general rules still apply: Article 228 on unlawful access to data or programs, and the GDPR for any personal data you collect. Not legal advice.

A free proxy is run by someone you cannot identify, who can log or alter what you send, passwords included. Check the address first: AS6677, AS12969, AS44735 or AS51896 with country IS means an Icelandic line, while a hosting company’s name means a rented server.

Enter gate.aeonproxy.com, port 7000, username ap_a1b2c3-cc-is and your password in the HTTP proxy settings of a browser extension, app or script. Add -sid-rvk01-time-7200 to the username to keep one exit for two hours. The docs cover SOCKS5; a free trial exists, and the pricing page has its current terms.

Yes. A Joint Committee Decision of 6 July 2018 brought it into the EEA Agreement, and Act 90/2018 applies it in Iceland. A public ad can still hold personal data, identification numbers included.
